Happy Labor Day, y'all!

We have had an interesting couple of days.  We were looking forward to a fun and productive long weekend together, with lots of family time.  I had some work to do, too, so I was hoping to finish up a couple of projects. 

Claire, of course, had other plans. 

In the days leading up to the weekend, her seizures increased.  Usually, Claire has 0-2 a day, almost always upon waking and never more than 10 seconds long.  On Thursday, we counted 5 seizures.  On Friday, 7.  Saturday, 15. 

At the same time, Claire had stopped eating well.  Most meals were a battle, and she was refusing almost all bottles. 

Our plan was to watch her over the weekend and talk to her neurologist on Tuesday about increasing her medications.  On Sunday, however, Claire got much worse pretty quickly.  By noon, we had counted more than 20 seizures, she still was refusing every bottle, and she had started rolling her eyes back and making sounds that suggested she was not feeling well.

Fearing dehydration was causing the seizure increase, we called the on-call neurologist for guidance. We were prepared to take Claire to the ER, but we didn't want to be unreasonable.  The on-call neurologist gave us several good reasons to go, so off we went!

After drawing labs, getting a urine culture, and starting IV fluids, the ER doctor determined Claire was not dehydrated.  This was good news in a way, but it did not explain the increased seizures.  We headed home knowing we would just have to wait and see. 

Claire woke up today feeling much better.  So, to celebrate, we took her to Sensations TheraFun this afternoon to play.  Sensations TheraFun is an activity cetner for children with special needs.  Typical children are welcome, too, but the center has lots of great therapeutic devices, like swings, trampolines, a bubble tube, etc.  Claire had a great time!

When we got home, we had a message that Claire's urine culture had come back showing a UTI.   While no one celebrates a UTI, this is kind of good news!  It explains why Claire has been having increased seizures, fewer wet diapers, and has been a puny eater.
